Online Recorder Consort
Disco Takeover!

The online recorder consort project, created by Otto Hashmi, brings together recorder players from over 35 countries, from absolute beginners to name professionals, exploring how the humble recorder has formed a vast community across the world.

Featuring Sarah Jeffrey of Team Recorder as a soloist, the minute long video uses Disco – building on the genre's universal appreciation with audiences across all walks of life – to bring together an international ensemble through a shared love for the recorder.

In the video, players are visualised as pop-up windows on a computer desktop. As more and more players join the party the system soon becomes flooded with pop-ups, leading to a system error. Tech support is called in the form of an eCorder ensemble (an electronic recorder instrument developed by Michael Shonle of Cantux Research) before the issue is passed on to bass support featuring Claudia Krämer on the Subsubgreatbass Recorder by Paetzold-Kunath, sounding as low as bottom C a contrabassoon.

A special thank you to Jo Kunath for help with finding the big basses, Michael Shonle with the eCorder, and Anastasia Pettinato who features on drums.

Throughout 2023, Otto Hashmi's work has focused on Dance music and its crossover with art music. Otto's latest EP ‘Music for the End Times' comes out on streaming services on Friday 15th September. The release explores the uncertainty of our modern times via dance music from London clubs in the wake of the 2020 lockdowns, contrasted with the recorder harmonies of early music. He will perform the project in its entirety at Notting Hill Arts Club on Thursday 21st September.

Otto Hashmi is a recorder player and solo artist from London. His work blurs boundaries between popular and classical music on an instrument often maligned in both worlds. Recent notable performances include supporting Shabaka Hutchings (Sons of Kemet, Sun Ra Arkestra) at Brighton Festival, and as a double bill with composer Ben Nobuto at Leighton House. He is currently studying his masters in recorder performance at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
